The first grade artists have been busy studying the world around them. They learned about the differences in where people live. They learned the words urban, suburban and rural. They studied the collages of artist Romare Bearden.

Then the first grade artists created their own block or neighborhood. The collages could be imagined or literal.

Dada Collages

The fourth grade artists start out the year studying the Dada art movement. We learned the Dada artists used realistic objects in an unrealistic way. The fourth grade artists had to use JUXTAPOSITION, SCALE CHANGE and BACK GROUND in their collage creations. We also learned about the Dada artist's radical response to what was happening in Europe in the 1920's. Ask a fourth grader about it!
