Spring Time Drawing From Life

As it goes in Indiana, in the spring time we have a couple if beautiful days to trick the daffodils into blooming, followed by a couple of very cold nights. The daffodils can't seem to handle the change. Knowing that, I picked all the blooming flowers outside of my room, before they could be killed by the frost and wind. The second grade artists used the flowers to observe while we made drawings.

Wish Fish

I have a fantastic student teacher named Kadi Miller. She created this lesson for the first grade artists and it was fantastic. First, the lesson was about texture. We made many texture rubbings in the classroom with different colored crayons. Then the students traced a fish shape on each texture. The students then learned about an artist names Rivane Neuenschwander.
After a discussion on wishes you can't hold in your hands, the students were invited to write their wishes on their texture fish. The students than did a study of the ocean and it's many zones (midnight zone, twilight zone and sunlight zone). They created an artwork of an ocean zone to use as their background. Then they cut out their "wish fish" and glued them on the ocean artwork.

Then to add on to the rich experience Kadi had the students make a fish from clay. The students added texture and then they added their favorite wish. They turned out beautiful! What you cannot see is the iridescent finish added to each fish.

Sweet Video

Our students just finished a week long course of study in disabilities. We had a lot of great people and groups come to  interact with the kids. The kids got to hear the incredible stories of all the presenters. I found this videoThe Present to go along with the themes and ideas that they were discussing during the week. Enjoy:

Love, Kindergarten

We like to call this lesson "We are all different, we are all the same". The kinders love creating "friends" out of the letters L-O-V-E. They used different techniques for the back ground.

MOOK!

The fourth grade artists studied the Italian artists calling themselves Mook: Carlo Nannetti and Francesca Crisafulli.  The students were taught this lesson by my fantastic student teacher Miss Kadi Miller. She did a super job of unleashing the student's creativity!  We also have to thank Mrs. Ann Peters for supplying the wood scraps. The students played around with the shapes, forming different animals shapes, until they were inspired by their creation. Then they sanded to parts, hot glued them together and then painted them.

Bravo Kadi, bravo fourth grade!
