Artist Robin Rhode

The fourth grade students learned about South African artist Robin Rhode. His work consists of his imagination and a piece of chalk.

Then the students created their own pieces. So cool!!

The stubby pencils

To drive the idea of re-purposing home I collected stubby pencils that are usually thrown away. Here is what you can do with garbage! So before you throw anything away, perhaps it can be made into cool artwork.
Check out this show this summer:

Greek Gods, Goddesses and Monsters

The third grade artists are finishing up their Greek unit. They are creating a portrait of a Greek God, Goddess or monster. They have updated the portraits to 2010.

Cyclops: Giant one-eyed monster

Hephaestus was God of fire and the forge, although he made armor and weapons for the Gods, he loved peace.

Sphinx Had the head of a woman, the body of a lion and wings. The special power of Sphinx was a riddle. Answer incorrectly and you get eaten! Ready? "What walks on all four legs in the morning, two legs at noon and three legs at night"?

Lazlo and the Kindergarten Artists

The kindergarten artists are studying the body and creating artwork on that subject. The artists made sketches of Lazlo the Skeleton, some artists even tried to draw all 206 bones! Keep posted for the finished product.

Wild Beast Self Portraits

The second grade studied the Wild Beast artists in first grade. We revisited them while we made self portraits. Les Fauves (French for The Wild Beasts) were a short-lived and loose grouping of early 20th century Modern artists whose works emphasized painterly qualities and strong colour over the representational or realistic values retained by Impressionism. The example below is by the wild beast Andre Derain. The next three works are student creations.
